What Odoo gets right
Odoo is a genuinely impressive platform: a full business suite at a licence price nobody serious competes with, an enormous app ecosystem, and a real Australian presence including a Gold Coast office. If your processes are generic and you can run it vanilla, it is excellent value, and a vanilla Odoo Online instance even upgrades itself for free. Many teams shortlisting the best ERP for manufacturing will, and should, look at it.
Where it breaks for a fabrication shop
The licence is the deposit, not the price
Australian Odoo partner rates are published at A$120–350 an hour. TryExcept's implementation guide puts 30-plus-user deployments at A$100,000–250,000+ up front and A$40,000–80,000+ a year from year two. DoImplement, a Perth partner, published a worked case: a 70-user precision metalwork shop moving off SAP Business One, partner fee A$214,000. A smaller shop pays less, and the same guides say so: a ten-user deployment lands at A$25,000–45,000. VentorTech, an Odoo Gold partner, independently puts a 50-user business at roughly US$50,000 a year recurring. The licence is the smallest line on the invoice.
Custom code meets a new version every year
Fabrication needs custom modules: dimensional material, offcuts, heat numbers, quoting from drawings. Odoo's own documentation says a database with custom modules "cannot be upgraded until a version of your custom modules is available for the target version", the upgrade guarantee excludes custom code, and each version is supported for three years before surcharges. A new major version ships every year, and partners publish migration projects from about US$5,000 to US$40,000. The clock restarts each release.
Production management and shop-floor control never reach the floor
Odoo's screens are desktop forms built for office staff. On the floor that means paper dockets, batch data entry at day's end, and a production schedule planned against yesterday. MirrorWorks runs a gloved-hands kiosk at the machine, so job status, time, and material draw are live.
